What are Chinese Herbs?

Picture
Herbal therapy is important in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for centuries in China, where herbs are considered fundamental therapy for many acute and chronic conditions. Like acupuncture, Chinese herbs can address unhealthy body patterns that manifest in a variety of symptoms and complaints. The aims of Chinese herbal therapy are to help you regain balance in your body and to strengthen your body’s resistance to disease. Chinese herbs may be used to treat a multitude of conditions and ailments.

Chinese herbs are useful in the rehabilitation from many chronic diseases, as well. Chinese herbal therapy may be recommended when you have multiple symptoms or symptoms that are hard to pinpoint, or if you have exhausted traditional medical options and nothing seems to help. Chinese herbal therapy is beneficial as preventive medicine.

How are they prepared?

Rather than prescribing specific herbs, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine typically combine a number of different herbs in formulas selected depending on the patient's individual needs.

Although there are literally thousands of traditional herbal formulas for just about every condition imaginable, a formula is almost always modified by the TCM practitioner to suit the subtle nuances of the condition and constitution of the patient, making each formulation highly individualized. All herbal formulas are put together in the clinic.

What you need to know:

Here at Derun Clinic, the herbal formulas are prepared as powders, which can be mixed with hot water to make a tea, are more convenient to prepare and use, and are not as pungent as traditional decoctions. We also provide herbal pills; however, the pills are already specifically designed for particular things and lack the individualization that the herbal formulas provide. When taking the herbs, the doctor might advise you to make specific changes in your diet, such as avoiding spicy foods or alcohol. Foods are believed to either ‘heat’ or ‘cool’ the constitution, making dietary changes an important part of the healing process.
  • Directions: You must put the entire contents of the bottle or baggy in 8-16 ounces of boiling water and mix it until it is fully dissolved. After allowing it to cool down re recommend drinking it entirely within one (1) hour after having breakfast, unless otherwise directed. If the taste is too strong, you are able to put in raw honey or mix it with juice.
  • While taking the herbal formula avoid consuming cold, greasy, or spicy foods, raw seafood, and especially any other teas. You are also instructed not to smoke or drink alcohol as well.
  • Taking the herbal formula in any way other as directed can lead to possible complications. When receiving an herbal formula, please make sure that you are clear on the directions of use.
  • Expiration date: 30 days from initial purchase.
